About Tom Bartlett

Bartlett is one of the most prolific artists you never would have heard of. Well over 1000 of his stencil/spray paint paintings adorn walls all over the world, with subjects ranging from Extreme Sports to Portraiture. While still producing the occasional stencil, he has moved towards a mixture of collage, painting and sculpture.

"I generally use materials that I find on the street or buy in charity shops and really started making these little images with words to make my friends laugh and sometimes think about the absurdity of some of the things in life that we take for granted. I was getting bored with the limitations of stencil work and the endless hours of cutting out complex shapes. Since 2002 I have sold at least 1,500 paintings of skateboarders, traceurs, BMXers and various portraits of people and animals. My more recent work was initially made for my house...however my friends started pestering me to make stuff for them, then friends of friends and then magazines were getting in touch with me and it kind of snowballed."

Under one of his pseudonyms, Def Peck, Bartlett is a member of the House of Fix. "Working with the House of Fix is a real treat for a wannabe artist. We shared our studio with James Hague (BP Portrait Artist of the Year Winner) and worked with Luke and Paul Insect to create music and sounds. It was spending time in their studio that initially got me into making stencils. How can you not be inspired to create when you are around these people?"
